The Genome Centre Cologne at the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) in Cologne is seeking a

Project Manager (m/f/div)

as part-time (50%) and initially limited for 2 years. The approximate starting date will be August 2021. Payment and benefits are according to German TVöD. You will work in a state-of-the-art next generation sequencing (NGS) scientific service group of the Max Planck Genome-centre Cologne. The Max Planck Institute of Plant Breeding Research (MPIPZ) (http://www.mpipz.mpg.de/) is one of the world’s premier sites committed to research of fundamental processes and training in plant biology. There are four science departments, the Genome Centre Cologne, three independent research groups and specialist support, totaling ~ 400 staff including externally funded positions.

Your tasks


  • LIMS-based tracking of projects on multiple sequencing platforms
  • Subcontractor management and training, when necessary
  • Coordination and communication with internal and external customers on a project basis (genome, metagenome, microbiome and other genomic/transcriptomic applications)
  •  Invoice/purchase order/payment tracking
  • Support and coordination of technical staff
  • What we are looking for:


  • You have a completed your scientific doctorate in biology or a related field (molecular biology, molecular genetics and general biology)
  • You are eager to learn, detail oriented and accurate
  • You are professional, you have some experience in project management and are willing to intensify and broaden this knowledge
  •  You are familiar with client management
  • You have proven knowledge in genetics, biochemistry and next generation sequencing technologies (short-read and long-read methods)
  • You have strong communication skills
  • You have some experience in acquisition work, promotion, and cultivating clients, including writing
  • Skills:


  • Professional writing, understanding of importance of business communications and nuances
  • Good solid knowledge of Excel and Powerpoint, bioinformatic knowledge is clearly a plus

      Language skills:


    • Fluent in English (able to take client calls in English, prepare English-language reports, present in English)
    • High proficiency in German
