Junior Group Leader Position in Plant Chromosome Biology (m/f/d)

The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Co-logne is inviting applications for a 5-year junior group leader position in the field of plant genetics, with the possibility of extension. The institute is a major site in Europe committed to basic research in plant science. The working language is English.

The department of Chromosome Biology, headed by Raphael Mercier, opened in 2019. Four teams focus on diverse aspects of genome biology, with complementary aims and approach-es (Molecular Mechanisms of Meiosis, Evolution of Meiosis, Polyploidy & Adaption, Genome Plasticity & Computational Genetics. https://www.mpipz.mpg.de/chromosome-biology).
The Department of Chromosome Biology is seeking a junior group leader to establish an independent research team with complementary interests to those of existing groups. The ide-al candidate will have a strong track record in relevant fields and typically be at the transition point from postdoctoral re-search to academic independence. Applicants should demon-strate the potential to develop an innovative and internationally competitive research program. We welcome applica-tions from individuals working in any discipline related to chromosome biology, broadly defined. The primary criteria for selection are scientific excellence and complementarity with ongoing research in the department.

The successful applicant is expected to establish their re-search group in 2025 or 2026. The group will receive support from the Institute’s core budget, including funding for a post-doc, a student and running costs. She/He is also expected to apply for external funding (e.g. DFG, ERC). The group will ben-efit from a stimulating scientific environment and access to state-of-the-art infrastructure, including extensive plant growth facilities, in-house sequencing and computational resources, a phenotyping robot, as well as confocal and su-per-resolution microscopy platforms. The salary will be according to German civil service conditions (TVöD Bund) and includes social security benefits.

Candidates should send their curriculum vitae including a full list of publications, names of three referees, list of up to three selected articles, and a ~2-3 page resume of current and future research interests through the online system (https://www.mpipz.mpg.de/vacancies). The call will remain open until the position is fulfilled.

The call is open until 31 October 2025, but application are encouraged to be submitted before and will be reviewed as soon as they are received.

The Max Planck Society is one of the leading research organizations in Europe. We offer challenging tasks with a high degree of personal responsibility and creative freedom in research laboratories, workshops, libraries and administration.

The Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research conducts basic research on plants and their development using a wide variety of methods, in particular molecular genetics, genomics, imaging processes, computational biology and biochemistry. Our goal is the deep and detailed understanding of fundamental mechanisms in plant biology, which may also then be used to develop innovative strategies for plant breeding.

The Max Planck Society strives to increase employment of severely disabled people. Applications from severely disabled people are expressly encouraged.

Furthermore, the Max Planck Society wants to increase the proportion of women in areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore expressly encouraged to apply.

The Little Pumpkins Parents' Association offers childcare for children under the age of 3 at the MPIPZ.

It is possible to apply for a low-cost Germany job ticket with a subsidy from the Institute. The institute also has a rental bike station run by the provider nextbike, as well as the possibility of using rental scooters from various providers.
